Description
A commemorative submariner's plate in white enamelled Meissen porcelain decorated in blue with the Knight's Iron Cross with oak leaves, the cross of the order "for merit" and the submariner's patents of the Great War (with imperial crown) and of the Third Reich. In the centre, a submarine profile with a golden yellow dedication underneath: Kapitänleutnant Folkers. On the reverse: the crossed swords are the symbol of the Meissen brand. These plates were produced by the Association of German Submarine Veterans of the First World War to be presented to young submarine commanders of the Second World War when they were awarded the oak leaf distinction on their Knight's Cross. Only 81 were produced. (A further 10 could not be awarded, the commanders having died before confirming their right to the decoration). Biography of Kapitänleutnant Ulrich Folkers (Crew 34): Born on 6 March 1915 in Kiel, died on 6 May 1943. To his credit: 17 ships sunk. Career progression / ranks: 8 April 1934 Offiziersanwärter, 26 September 1934, Seekadett 1 July 1935, Fähnrich zur See 1 January 1937, Oberfähnrich zur See 1 April 1937, Leutnant zur See 1 April 1939, Oberleutnant zur See 1 November 1941, Kapitänleutnant. Honours and awards: 15 January 1940 Iron Cross 2nd class - 26 March 1941 Breveté sous-marinier - 27 March 1943 Knight's Cross He commanded the submarines (U-boats) : U-37 from 3 May 1941 to 15 November 1941 (no war patrols) then U-125 from 15 December 1941 to 6 May 1943 with which he carried out 5 patrols (339 days at sea). At the age of 28, he and the entire crew of U-125 perished in the North Atlantic on 6 May 1943, after suffering extensive damage from British destroyers.
