Description
Bernard ROULET (1923–2006). Plough. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. 50 x 73 cm (Dent and missing sections in the lower right-hand corner)
Provenance: Purchased at the sale of the artist’s studio collection at the Coulommiers Auction House on 28 April 2018.
Bernard Roulet was born in Paris in 1923. After completing his secondary education at the Lycée Henri IV, his literature teacher, Georges Pompidou, suggested he pursue an artistic career. After enrolling at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he helped create the mosaic at the Church of Assy under the direction of Fernand Léger. In 1950, he founded an institution in Paris designed to prepare students for admission to the leading art schools. In 1953, he decided to move out of Paris and chose Coulommiers. It was there that his true adventure as a painter began. Bernard Roulet deliberately turned towards figurative painting, drawn to the beauty of the Brie landscapes and the richness of rural life. He was encouraged by the success of several exhibitions and, above all, by the interest shown in him by Louise WEISS, Paul SERAMY, Alain PEYREFITTE, Bertrand FLORNOY and Alain POHER, who made the Senate’s ORANGERIE at the Palais du Luxembourg available to him for a major exhibition. Jean COCTEAU saw strange insects in his farming implements. In 1993, Guy DRUT made a room at the Commanderie des Templiers in Coulommiers available to him as part of a major retrospective covering ‘40 years of painting in Brie’. In 1997, he was appointed a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.
