Description
MANEC (Pierre-Adrien). Letters on Homeopathy, or a Complete Refutation of this Method of Treatment. Paris, Librairie de Victor Masson, 1855. 8vo, paperback, xxvi pp., 240 pp. Yellow printed cover.
The author, a professor of anatomy and former military surgeon, quotes Trousseau on the title page: ‘Homeopathy is a medical system based on the unknown, aiming at the impossible and resulting in futility.’
This introductory remark quite clearly sets out Manec’s view of this medical practice, which had emerged half a century earlier.
Also included: D’AILHAUD (Jean-Gaspard). Treatise on the True Cause of Diseases and the Surest Way to Cure Them by Means of a Single Remedy. Carpentras, published by Dominique-Gaspard Quenin, 1776. 12mo, paperback, xxviii pp., 764 pp. Contemporary shell-paper dust jacket.
Jean d’Ailhaud (1674–1756) invented a miraculous powder capable of curing all illnesses. His son Jean-Gaspard, also a doctor and the only one to know the secret of its manufacture – we now know it was a mixture of resin, scammony and soot – went on to promote the product worldwide by publishing an 800-page work filled with accounts of miraculous cures. This is that very work, in its first edition. Cover worn. Marginal worm damage to the first 20 leaves.
- Included: RASPAIL (F.-V.). *Le fermier-vétérinaire*. Paris, 1858. Paperback, 288 pp.
