Enki Bilal (born 1951) La Foire aux immortels – Dargaud, 1980 Original artwork no. 52 in Indian ink and acrylic on paper for La Foire aux immortels, a story first published in January 1980 in Pilote magazine (no. 68) and published in July 1980 by Dargaud, marking the first instalment of the legendary Nikopol Trilogy. A direct continuation of plate 51, this composition retains the same colour palette and continues the plot as the three election candidates are introduced by Pope Theodule I. Here, we see the Pope beginning his prayer whilst levitating, surrounded by cherubs who are, in reality, small parasitic extraterrestrial creatures. These figures serve as a cynical and absurd symbol of a regime that parodies religious iconography for the purposes of political manipulation. Signed in the bottom right-hand corner.
