Leaf extracted from a Gospel Book manuscript.
Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Inscription in Armenian (in tiny characters "bolorgir") above the miniature.
Oriental paper, ink, tempera, liquid gold.
Turkey, Constantinople (Istanbul), late 16th century
Attributed to the copyist and illuminator Martiros de Khizan (circa 1546-1607).
A few stains to the paper, minor paper tears. Good condition.
Size: 194 x 140 mm (sheet size); miniature size: 125 x 88 mm.
A superb example of Armenian illumination from the late 16th century.
Khizan, now Hizan, is a town south of Lake Van and south-east of Bitlis. Martiros de Khizan was a local artist who was active in the Khizan region and on the shores of Lake Van, as well as in Constantinople within the Armenian community.
Other leaves from this dismembered manuscript were sold at auction. These include Paris, Artcurial, Collection of Liuba and Ernesto Wolf, 1 December 2014, lots 46-48; London, Christie's, 23 April 2015, lot 196 (Raising of Lazarus).
Another manuscript dated 1596 and located in Constantinople, painted by Martiros de Khizan, is held in Dublin, Chester Beatty Library (Sirarpie Der Nersessian, The Chester Beatty Library. A Catalogue of the Armenian Manuscripts, Dublin, 1958, no. 573, vol. I, pp. 76-81, vol. II, pl. 46-47, with an Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem reproduced on plate 47). This manuscript contains a colophon on fol. 354v-356v: "[...] And now, I, the least of the clerics and the most unworthy of the children of the Church...misnamed Martiros of Hizan...". (Sirarpie Der Nersessian, 1958, p. 76).
