INDOCHINA. - LANTHIEZ (Suzanne). Album amicorum, 1909-1959 and no date. In-12, 272 pp. Brown morocco, polychrome floral design embossed on the first cover, double ribbed spine, gilt edges, gilt border inside, burgundy silk lining and endpapers (binding circa 1900). Suzanne Lanthiez (1888-after 1965): Memories of an artistic life between France and Indochina. This intimate album brings together the artistic and social memories of Suzanne Lanthiez, a French painter who lived for over twenty years in Indochina. Originally from Arras, she married Raoul Bonnal in Hanoi in 1923, a naval officer and senior inspector of the Garde Indigène d'Annam et du Tonkin - with no apparent connection to the eponymous senior resident of Tonkin. Trained as a painter by Ferdinand Humbert, Marie Laforge and Gabrielle Debillemont-Chardon, she exhibited under various pseudonyms: Suzanne Lanthiez de Noreuil (in reference to a village near Arras), Suzanne Bonnal de Noreuil, and Nguyễn Viết Chủ. A treasure trove of encounters. The album brings together around 175 signatures, dedications, quotes and drawings - some full-page - from musicians, painters, writers, actors and directors, and politicians, including: - Organist and composer Alexandre Georges (p. 2). - Writers Jean Richepin (p. 5 and 156), Paul Morand (p. 136), Tristan Bernard (p. 148), Maurice Rostand and Rosemonde Gérard (1949, p. 173). - The painters Georges Barrière and Joseph Inguimberty, teachers at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, with original drawings: a Tonkinoise woman and her child (p. 163) and an Asian scene (p. 127). Yves Brayer (p. 106), Raymond Peynet (with drawing, 1952, p. 180 and 187) - Louis Rollet, with an illustrated dedication from Huế. - Actors and actresses Albert-Lambert (1913, p. 23), Madeleine Roche (p. 66), Jean Marais (p. 115), Cécile Sorel (pp. 118-119), Jean-Louis Barrault and Madeleine Renaud (p. 126), Lucien Guitry (p. 149), Marlène Dietrich (idem), Mary Marquet (p. 176). - The writer Maurice Dekobra, visiting Huế (1934, p. 38). - The philosopher Lucien Lévy-Bruhl, on a mission to Hanoi (1920, p. 85). - The actor and director Jean Vilar (p. 94). - Charlie Chaplin, on tour in Tourane (Đà Nẵng), who leaves a dedication (p. 124). - Emperor Bao Dai and Empress Nam Phương, who sign in Đà Lạt in January 1945, a few weeks before the abdication (p. 167). - Political and intellectual figures, such as François-Marius Baudouin (acting governor-general), Roger Bauduin de Belleval (director of the Maison de l'Indochine at the Cité Universitaire in Paris), Amédée Thalamas (director of Public Instruction in Indochina), and the Italian diplomat Carlo Sforza, crossed paths on board the liner Athos en route to Shanghai (1927, p. 129). A self-portrait of Suzanne Lanthiez completes this exceptional collection, which bears witness to an artistic and cosmopolitan life between colonial Indochina and international cultural circles. Inner hinge of first cover cracked. Self-portrait of Suzanne Lanthiez unbound.
