Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano. - Second parte delle logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano che contiene XIII volte ed il loro respettivi quadri. - Terza ed ultima parte delle logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano, che contiene il compimento degli ornati, e de' Bassirilievi antichi esistenti nelle logge medesime.
Rome: Marco Pagliarini, 1772-1776-1777. - 3 volumes in 2 broadsides, 497 x 685 and 651 x 594 : Engraved title, (1 f.), 30 plates ; engraved title, 13 plates. Half blue calf (volume 1) and half blue chagrin (volume 2), smooth spines (19th century binding).
First edition of the three series of engravings of the Vatican Lodges.
It shows the decorations produced by Raphael, Giovanni da Udine, Giulio Romano and their collaborators in the Vatican Palace Lodges for Pope Leo X between 1515 and 1519. It is the first attempt to recreate the entire decorative scheme of the pilasters and pillars in this mythical place.
The three series of engravings are divided here into two volumes: the first and third series are bound together under the title of the third, while the second series forms a separate volume.
The edition includes a text leaf, a title-frontispiece, two engraved titles and forty-one plates (one on three leaves and twenty-six on two leaves), making a total of ninety-six engravings, distributed as follows:
First album (1772)
- A title-frontispiece engraved by Joannes Volpato after Petrus Camporesi, offering a full-length view of the loggia and decorated with an oval portrait of Raphael at the head.
- A folio printed on two columns, entitled Agli amatori dele belle arti, enriched with a copper-engraved entablature and lettering.
- A plan and an elevation, consisting of three sheets joined together (1.80 m long), entitled: "Spaccato per il longo del secondo piano della loggia nel Cortile del Palazzo Vaticano corrispondente nel Cortile grande detto di S. Damaso, ove si dimostra l'Architettura ed Ornati della medesima dipinti da Giovanni da Udine con la direzzione di Rafaele Sanzio da Urbino".
- Two large plates (99 x 49 cm) representing the two doors at the ends of the loggia, lettered A and B, each consisting of two sheets joined together.
- Fourteen plates (approx. 1 m x 49.5 cm) illustrating the decoration of the pilasters between the windows on the interior side, numbered I to XIV.
All the plates, with the exception of the title, were drawn by Gaetano Savorelli and Pietro Camporesi, and engraved by Giovanni Ottaviani, with the exception of plate IX, signed by Ottaviani alone.
Second album (1776)
- An unsigned engraved title: "Seconda parte delle logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano che contiene XIII volte ed il loro rispettivi quadri".
- Thirteen large plates (65 x 59 cm) depicting the decoration of the doors and windows of the loggia, on the interior side, as well as biblical scenes from the vault (twelve from the Hebrew Bible, one from the Gospel), captioned in Latin. Engraved by Giovanni Ottaviani after drawings by Gaetano Savorelli and Pietro Camporesi.
Third album (1777)
- An unsigned engraved title: "Terza ed ultima parte delle logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano, che contiene il compimento degli ornati, e de' Bassirilievi antichi esistenti nelle logge medesime".
- Twelve plates (approx. 1.03 m x 49.5 cm) showing the decoration of the pillars of the loggia, numbered from 1 to 12, each consisting of two sheets joined together. Engraved by Giovanni Volpato after drawings by Ludovicus Teseo Taurinensis.
Copy in black, in 19th century bindings. All plates mounted on mitre.
Bindings rubbed with use, corners dulled, headpieces damaged. Some spotting and soiling rarely affecting the engravings.
