Raccolta delle principali vedute di Roma.
Rome, 1835-[1837]. - In-4 oblong, 288 x 424 : 40 plates. Black half-chagrin with corners, gilt roulette, black chagrin label decorated with a gilt frame and title in the centre of the first plate, smooth spine decorated, red edges (period binding).
This very fine album contains 40 plates of views of the ruins of Rome by the Italian draughtsman and engraver Domenico Amici (1808-18.).
The copy presented here includes all the views executed by the artist between 1832 and 1837, each plate bearing the date of its creation. Subsequent editions will include these same plates, enriched with new views dating from the 1840s.
These engravings, which are highly sought-after today, are distinguished by their format and remarkable precision. Each of them incorporates scenes animated by figures, giving the views a striking, almost photographic realism.
A copy on wove paper from the library of the British colonel Henry Madox, with his bookplate on which is also written "Rome 1839". Madox began his military career in 1800 as a cornet (the lowest rank in the British cavalry) and became a captain in 1805. During the Waterloo campaign, after the Battle of Quatre-Bras, he led three cavalry squadrons to evacuate the wounded to Brussels. On 18 June 1815, he commanded a squadron of Inniskillings during the charge, then took command of the regiment after the loss of the senior officers. Promoted to major by brevet for his actions, he was subsequently confirmed major in 1817, placed on half-pay in 1825 and reinstated in 1833. He was finally promoted to lieutenant-colonel the same year and colonel in 1838.
The book was later acquired by Sidney Carr Hobart Mercer Henderson, 7th Earl of Buckinghamshire (1860-1930), a British Liberal politician, with his bookplate.
