Dark brown morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, arms of the city of Dijon gilt and mosaic in a gilt oval frame bordered with flowers in the centre of the first cover, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt roulette framing the inside, linings in burgundy long-grained morocco decorated with a frame of two gilt fillets with arms of Dijon and Burgundy gilt and mosaic in the corners, EL figure gilt and mosaic in the centre of the first lining, and a rosette of gilt foliage surrounding a red morocco pastille decorated with a gilt vine leaf and bunch of grapes in the centre of the second lining, moiré silk endpapers with marbled decoration in violet tones, Tributes in gilt lettering on the first flyleaf of the first volume, gilt head, untrimmed, green imitation leather slipcase, lined with velvet and beige silk, framed with a white cord, clasps (Marchet and Roux). First edition of this monumental work by lawyer and art historian Henri Chabeuf (1835-1925), which was awarded the Prix Thérouanne by the Académie française. "The title given to this book sufficiently indicates that the aim was not to produce a methodical and complete history, but to trace the material and moral history of Dijon through the ages, by attaching to each stone the memory of the men who succeeded each other where we live, and who left something of themselves in the monuments that time and generations have respected or destroyed" (Foreword). The illustrations include 140 photogravures, 100 of which are out of the text. A precious copy, one of 10 on Hollande paper (no. 10), numbered and signed by the publisher in the justification. This is the copy offered by the municipality of Dijon to the new President of the French Republic, Émile Loubet (1838-1929), on the occasion of the great celebrations of 21 and 22 May 1899, shortly after his election to this office on 18 February 1899. Sumptuously bound by Dijon bookbinders Marchet and Roux, this copy bears this tribute in gilt lettering on the first endpaper of the first volume: To Monsieur Émile Loubet, President of the French Republic. Tribute from the Municipality of Dijon in memory of 21 and 22 May 1899 The forgeries also include this autograph dedication signed by the mayor of Dijon at the time, Auguste MORIN-GACON: A token of appreciation // to Monsieur Emile Loubet // President of the Republic // Presented by the Municipality // on behalf of the City of Dijon // Dijon 21 May 1899 // The Mayor // Aug. Morin-Gacon This dedication is stamped by the Dijon Town Hall. Attached is a copy of the menu for the banquet offered by the city to Émile Loubet at the Salle des États de Bourgogne on 21 May 1899. Some foxing otherwise a perfectly preserved copy. The clasps of the boxes are defective.
