London: S. Gosnell for W. Miller, 1803. - In-folio, 365 x 263 : (82 ff.), 73 plates. Brown calf, gilt roulette and gilt fillets framing the boards, spine gilt, edges gilt (modern binding with original boards and spine rebound).
First French-English edition, part of the collection on costumes published by Miller. Dedicated to Charles Hatchett, it includes 73 plates engraved in colour by J. Dadley, showing the many nations of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th century.
"The authenticity of this work can hardly be doubted as the plates it contains were faithfully copied from those in the collection begun in Petersburg in 1776 and completed in 1779 by C. W. Müller at his own expense, in accordance with the wishes of Empress Catherine II, who accepted the dedication. In the work [...] we have followed exactly the plan of the original. The first twenty plates describe the nations that originated with the Finns. The various Tartar hordes subject to Russia are described in the following twenty-two plates. The Forty-third Plate, and the following ones, up to and including the Fifty-ninth, relate to the different tribes of Samoyeds, and to those who inhabit the most eastern part of Siberia, and the islands of the Oriental Ocean. The Sixtieth Plate and the following ones include the Kalmyks, the Mongols and some other lesser tribes" (Preface).
A copy in a modern binding, with the original boards, spine and endpapers brought back with their flaws restored (scuffing, lacks, etc.).
Scattered foxing. Transfer of the engravings to the facing leaves.
Provenance: bookplate depicting a forearm holding a torch, surmounted by the divise "Dux mihi Deus".
