LEONHARDI (Friedrich Gottlob).
Costumes of all known peoples; with a brief note on their customs and religions.
Leipzig: Au comptoir d'industrie, [1803-1804]. - in-4, 195 x 163: (1 f.), 18 pp. 40 plates. Half basane with corners, smooth spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding).
Colas, I, 1834.
First French edition of this collection of costumes.
It is an abridgement of the work that Leonhardi (1757-1814), professor of economics at the University of Leipzig, published from 1798 and which included 122 plates. This volume, published in Year XII (1803-1804), as attested by the Journal général de la littérature étrangère of that year, contains 40 plates of costumes in colour, relating to 31 nations. According to the Journal général, "several costumes have been omitted here, so that the text does not always agree with the plates, which are moreover illuminated with greater care than those in the German edition".
A second volume of 40 plates was also published the following year.
A good copy in contemporary binding.
Some rubbing and spotting, minor worm damage to one hinge, corners slightly dulled. One freckle on pages 11 to 16.
Provenance: J. B. Powis, with armorial bookplate.
