DIETRICH (Luc). Le Bonheur des tristes. Novel. Paris: Denoël et Steele, [1935]. - In-8, 197 x 122 : 282 pp, (3 ff. last blank), printed cover. Black half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt head, untrimmed, first cover preserved (P. Got & C. Vilaine). Boudrot, 156. First edition of this largely autobiographical novel. It is dedicated to the writer Lanza del Vasto (1901-1981), whose meeting with Luc Dietrich in 1932 was decisive for him. He encouraged him to collect his childhood memories, which he did in this book, which was well received and even shortlisted for the Goncourt Prize. At the head of the book is a printed dedication: "To my friend Lanza del Vasto who, having witnessed all my hesitations and fears, gave me his time and his knowledge to draw this book out of me, and who worked on it with an ardour equal to my own. This autobiographical novel mixes reality and dreamlike passages, written in sober, elegant language, exposing the horror of the author's experiences, such as the painful episode of his work on the farm. This writing exercise helped him to come to terms with his inner demons. One of 10 first copies on Arches paper, this one of 5 hors commerce, specially printed for Juliette Beckers, wife of Robert Beckers, a childhood friend of the publisher Denoël. A very fine copy in a modern binding, with an original photograph of Dietrich with Lanza del Vasto mounted at the head. The verso indicates that the photograph was taken by Rosy Rey. It also says: "Return to: JD Jolly Monge: JD Jolly Monge". This is the photographer Jean Daniel Jolly Monge, who took part in the republication of texts by Lanza del Vasto and Dietrich. A perfectly preserved copy, without the second cover or the back cover. Provenance: Juliette Beckers.
