First edition.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry drew on his life as a pilot and his reports to write his third book, Terre des hommes, published in February 1939. Although considered an autobiographical account rather than a novel, it was awarded the Grand Prix du roman by the Académie française. The book recounts the adventures of the Aéropostale pilots between 1926 and 1935. In particular, the author recalls his early days with the Latécoère company in Toulouse, and his role in transporting mail between Toulouse and Dakar. He tackles profound themes such as death, friendship and the search for meaning. The original title, Étoile par grand vent, was changed to Terre des hommes at the suggestion of his cousin André de Fonscolombe. The book was also published in the United States in June 1939, under the title Wind, Sand and Stars.
