Description
[ENLUMINATION] Leaf extracted from an antiphonary. In Latin, ornate manuscript on parchment; music in neumatic Aquitanian notation. France, Lyon ? or south-west ? circa 1200. Binding damaged, recto in good condition, verso not very legible. Dimensions: 250 x 195 mm Minuscule caroline script, brown ink, headings in red, large initials with cadence, musical staves drawn in brown ink, one line drawn in red, large initials painted in red, notated music, neumes. From the 13th century onwards, square notation was definitively adopted. From the twelfth century onwards, the neumes were stretched and distorted (as in this leaflet) to evolve towards square or Gregorian notation. This is a good example of late Aquitanian neumatic notation. We note the Magnificat antiphon: "Quod uni ex minimis meis...". Lenten Office ?
