Description
[CALLIGRAPHY] PEÜCHLEIN (Andreas). Religious calligraphic composition. In German, watercolour composition on paper. Germany, composition dated 1764. Large composition, on paper, brown ink and watercolour (green and yellow), with a large captioned drawing (sun and stars), writing in Gothic, and in cursive. Framed, under glass. Dimensions (as seen): 725 x 535 mm Generally good condition, some wetness in the upper part of the leaf with ink streaks, but not impeding reading. A few folds to the leaf. A large leaf, a fine example of calligraphy, signed by Andreas Peüchlein. At the bottom of the composition we note: "Andreas Peüchlein hat dises geschreiben anno 1764". The calligrapher does not specify where this work was copied. Incipit: "Jesus Christus Die Sonne der Gerechtigkeit...". [Jesus Christ, the Sun of Justice...] (Malachi, 4:2). The biblical text of Malachi 4:2 is as follows: "But for you who fear my name, the sun of justice will rise, and healing will be under its wings...". This explains the captioned sun motif and drawing below the text. Several captions accompany the drawings of the sun and star, with references to the sacred texts. Around the star we read in larger letters: "Ehre seÿ Gott der Heiligen Dreyfaltigkeit" which is a reference to a prayer by Saint Augustine on the Holy Trinity (Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit).
