Description
[BIBLE]. [KOBERGER (Anton)]
Creation of Adam and Eve.
Engraving introducing the book of Genesis.
Large heightened and illuminated engraving taken from the German Bible, A. Koberger [1483].
Dimensions of the illuminated engraving, at sight: 90 x 90 mm; dimensions of the frame: 430 x 380 mm
A fine example of a printed folio enhanced to give the illusion of an illuminated manuscript folio. This engraving is taken from the famous Koberger Bible, published in German in Nuremberg in 1483. It was the second German-language Bible to appear in Nuremberg after the Sensenschmidt Bible (circa 1476-78).
Certainly one of the best-known printers and publishers of the Renaissance, Anton Koberger (1440-1513) is closely associated with the most famous illustrated incunabulum, Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle. The Koberger Bible of 1483 contains woodcuts attributed to the "Master of the Cologne Bible", clearly influenced by the biblical illustrations of Dürer. The best-known engraving in the Koberger Bible is the large half-page woodcut depicting Creation, with a circle of angels surrounding the vast ocean populated by sea monsters, at the centre of which is the round, verdant island of Eden, from where God gently lifts Eve by the hand from the side of the sleeping Adam.
