V.: 158 Stundenbuchdrucke der Sammlung Bibermühle, Ramsen, 2003, I, no. 33 and IV, no. 33a. The engravings in these Hours are based on models attributable to the artist known as the "Master of the Very Small Hours of Anne of Brittany" (after the Paris Hours, BnF NAL 3120) or the "Master of the Rose of the Apocalypse in the Sainte-Chapelle", who was active in Paris from around 1490 to circa 1508/1510. A painter, illuminator, engraver, designer of tapestry patterns and stained glass cartoons for several Paris churches, this artist is considered to be the successor of the Master of Dreux Budé (André d'Ypres?), then of the Master of Coëtivy (Nicolas or Colin d'Amiens, alias Nicolas d'Ypres?): he could be identified with Jean d'Ypres (died 1508). Like his contemporary, the Master of the Cardinal of Bourbon, the Master of the Très Petites Heures of Anne de Bretagne provided drawings for engravings in the "Ypres style", following in the footsteps of the Master of Coëtivy, between 1489 and 1507, for illustrated editions by Jean Dupré, Simon Vostre, Thielman Kerver and Antoine Vérard, among others. Exceptionally, the artist illuminated his own engravings. Provenance: old signature on the first and last leaves, partly redacted or modified, "De Mathiori in finem" and "Mathiori" (or should it read "Malgiori" after the modification?). Text: Sig.
