Genève: Pellet, 1777-1779 [Tomes I à XXXIX] ; Lyon: Amable Le Roy, 1780-1781 [Table]. - 45 volumes in-4, 252 x 197. Marbled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Adams, G6, pp. 343-365. Second Geneva edition, the first in-4, of the famous Diderot-D'Alembert "Encyclopédie". The 36 volumes of text include a portrait of Diderot and D'Alembert after Charles-Nicolas Cochin in the first volume, as well as 11 fold-out tables out of text. The 2 folding tables in the 34th volume are included in the pagination and constitute pages 717 to 720 and 731 to 734. Without the clock plate in volume XXXVI. In addition, there are 430 plates (one double plate counts as one plate) and 10 fold-out maps, spread over the last three volumes. These 39 volumes are all from the second edition in Geneva, with the exception of volumes XXXIII and XXXVI, which belong to the third edition. Contrary to Adams' description, volume XIII here is dated 1777 rather than 1778, with a vignette of Mercury on the title rather than Pegasus. A rare copy, in uniform bindings, of the 6 volumes of tables published in Lyon by Amable Leroy in 1780 under the title Table analytique des matières contenues dans les XXXIX volumes in-quarto du Dictionnaire des sciences, des arts et des métiers. A very well preserved copy overall, with only a few tears and slight wear to some headpieces. Volumes XI and XII are slightly smaller. Some leaves browned. Wormholes in volume XIII and in the margin of the last leaves of volume XX and at the beginning of volume XXI.
