Description
PERUCCI (Francesco). Pompe funebri. Di tutte le nationi del mondo. Verona: Francesco Rossi, 1639. - In-folio, 269 x 183: title-frontispiece, (5 ff.), pp. 5-97, (1 blank f.). Speckled basane, spine ribbed and decorated, speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition, dedicated to Claudio Bassetti. This is one of the first comparative studies of funeral rites throughout the world (Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indian, Turkish, Christian, etc.). Its author, Francesco Perucci, compiled ancient and contemporary knowledge, at a time when Europe was gradually discovering new civilisations, thanks in particular to travellers' accounts, Jesuit missions and archaeological discoveries. The edition is illustrated with a title engraved by Alberto Ronco and 32 copper-engraved compositions in the text, 22 of which are copies of those produced by the Italian engraver Girolamo Porro (1520-1604) in 1574 for the work entitled Funerali antichi di diversi popopli et nationi... They show funeral scenes and various objects used during the ceremonies. Rubbing and spotting to binding, corners dulled. Very good condition inside despite a light wetness on the last leaves.
