BERNARDIN DE SAINT PIERRE (Henri). Paul et Virginie. La Chaumière indienne. Paris: L. Curmer, 1838. - In-8, 256 x 159 : engraved false title, (10 ff.), pp IX-LVI, 458 pp, (1 f.), 1 portrait, 34 plates, 1 map. Dark blue morocco, set with two double gilt fillets and 7 gilt fillets framing the boards, spine ribbed, gilt fillets inside, gilt edges (Marius Michel). One of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period, with 450 wood-engraved vignettes in the text, a colour map of the Ile de France engraved by Dyonnet, and 36 plates, including 7 portraits, on China paper. Only the 7 portraits were engraved on steel; the other plates were engraved on wood. These compositions are by Meissonier, Isabey, Tony Johannot, Marville, etc. Second edition copy with the rue de Richelieu address. It includes the portrait of the author with the sphere, the portrait of Madame de La Tour engraved by Cochran after Jenkins, that of the doctor by Cook after Parsons, and the portrait of the young bramine without the star on her forehead. A superb copy bound by Marius Michel, complete with captioned serpents. Some rare foxing.
