SAILLET (Alexandre de). Les Jeunes français de toutes les époques. Paris: P. C. Lehuby, [1846]. - In-8, 250 x 162: frontispiece, (2 ff.), 400 pp. 17 plates. Red basane, boards decorated with a large gilt and polychrome plate, consisting of plant motifs and scrolls bordering a frame made of wide straight and curved bands intertwining at the corners, itself framing a central diamond-shaped composition consisting of straight and curved intertwined fillets, embellished with scrolls, on an azure and diamond-shaped background, smooth spine decorated in the same spirit, gilt edges (publisher's binding). First edition of this collection of historical stories specially designed for young readers. Through captivating stories, it immerses young readers in the daily lives of French children through the centuries: their customs, their education, their clothes, but also the great people who marked their time. The book covers seven key periods - from the 5th to the 17th century, right through to the present day - offering an informative and entertaining journey through history. The edition is illustrated with 18 cameo lithographs by Jules David, Ange-Louis Janet, known as Janet-Lange, and Adolphe Mouilleron. There are also 7 wood-engraved chapter headings based on compositions by Auguste Hadamard and Louis Marckl. One engraving has an illegible signature and 2 are unsigned. A superb copy in the publisher's full gold binding, a most sought-after condition, especially in this superb state of preservation. This is the first edition, complete with the errata on the verso of the title. Freckles and several browned leaves as usual.
