First edition, printed on wove paper, of one of the major works of nineteenth-century French literature.
A copy in a contemporary binding and of first issue, which has remained very fresh inside despite a stain on the title of the second volume due to the removal of a mark.
Spine faded, rubbing and cracking to hinges. Without the last blank leaf at the end of the first volume nor the last leaf with the catalogue at the end of the second, as is often the case for copies bound at the time.
