Description
VIGNY (Alfred de).
Poèmes antiques et modernes.
Paris: Charpentier, 1846. - In-18, 173 x 108 : (2 ff.), 241 pp., (1 f.). Havana half calf, smooth spine decorated (contemporary binding).
New edition of this collection of poems first published in 1826. It is the same work as the Poésies complètes published in 1841 by the same publisher, but with a new title.
A precious copy by the poet Louise Colet (1810-1876), enriched by this autograph letter signed by the author on the false title:
Mad. Louise Colet // as a token of respect // and sympathy // Alfred de Vigny // August // 1846
This dedication has a special dimension. It dates precisely from 1846, the year in which Louise Colet and Alfred de Vigny met for the first time. They met in the studio of the sculptor James Pradier, when the 36-year-old poetess was at the height of her beauty. She ran a literary salon frequented by the greatest names of the day - Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, Alfred de Musset - and where Vigny became a regular. It was not until eight years later, in March 1854, that their relationship became amorous. Their romance lasted until the end of 1857.
A good copy.
Slight cracking to the hinges, corners foxed.
Provenance:
Louise Colet, with a letter from the author.
