Description
ÉLUARD (Paul). Le Temps déborde. Paris: Cahiers d'Art, [1947]. - Large in-8, 245 x 182: frontispiece, (24 ff. first and last 2 blank), printed cover. Paperback, filled cover. First edition published under the pseudonym of Didier Desroches. This is a major collection of poems by Paul Éluard, marked by the sudden loss of Nush, his love, on 28 November 1946 and by the post-war period. In four sections - "Le temps déborde" ("Time overflows"), "Les yeux fertiles" ("Fertile eyes"), "Le livre ouvert" ("The open book") and "Le temps des secrets" ("The time of secrets") - the poet explores the passage of time, passionate love, the quest for freedom and the mysteries of existence. Combining lyricism, surreal metaphors and humanist commitment, the poet expresses a deep melancholy, while celebrating the resilience and ephemeral beauty of life. The edition is illustrated with 11 black-and-white photographs of striking portraits of Nush by two major figures of twentieth-century art: MAN RAY (1890-1976) and Dora MAAR (1907-1997). Limited edition of 500 numbered copies (no. 178). Small tears on the spine, otherwise a very well preserved copy.
