[FALIÈRES PHOSPHATE]. DEVAMBEZ (André). RABIER (Benjamin). WILLETTE (Adolphe). MORIN (Louis). COURBOIN (Eugène). GEOFFROY (Jean, known as GEO). BELVILLE (Eugène). GUILLAUME (Albert). LEANDRE (Charles). STEINLEN (Théophile). POULBOT (Francisque). NAUDIN (Bernard).
Set of eighteen tales from the Phosphatine Falières.
Printed by Devambez. Engraver, art publisher. Paris. [1904- circa 1910]. Eighteen envelopes (19 x 13.7 cm), one of them (28.8 x 20.5 cm), illustrated in blue, red, brown or green, sealed with a long illustrated label on the reverse. They contain a folded plate (approx. 56 x 40 cm), one (80.7 x 56 cm), illustrated in colour.
A rare and important set of eighteen Falières Phosphatine tales in their original illustrated wrappers.
The plates, printed in colour, brought together the most prominent painters and illustrators of the period, and were meticulously printed on fine, strong paper by the art printing and publishing firm of Edouard Devambez (1844-1923).
Posters celebrating the famous children's porridge invented by pharmacist Emile Falières (1833-1908) in 1866. It was under the direction of his successor, Eugène Chassaing (1843-1912), that the most innovative advertising campaigns, targeting both children and adults, saw the light of day.
The collection includes five plates by the painter André Devambez (1867-1944), son of the printer, three plates by Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) (the only ones dated in the series: Contes 3, 4: 1904 and Planche 16: 1906, the latter being a game of goose) and the astonishing double plate 14 by Charles Léandre (1862-1934). Each artist has his own extremely inventive and graphically accomplished style, and the layouts are always varied.
Tale 1. La Fée bienfaisante by André Devambez.
Tale 2. Les Etrennes du méchant Totor by André Devambez.
Tale 3. Briffaut le bon chien [on the board]. Histoire de Briffaut le bon chien ou les bienfaits de la Phosphatine Falières [on the envelope] by Benjamin Rabier.
Tale 4. The Animals and Falières Phosphatine by Benjamin Rabier.
Tale 5. The true story of Cricri dite Touche-à-tout by Adolphe Willette (1857-1926).
Tale 6. Le Nouveau Chaperon rouge by Louis Morin (1855-1938).
Story 7. Histoire d'un petit fifre by Eugène Courboin (1851-1925).
Story 8. Histoire de la petite Tata et du gros Patapouf by André Devambez.
Story 9. Les Aventures du Capitaine Mille-Sabords by André Devambez.
Story 10. Un Bon Petit Coeur by Jean Geoffroy [dit Géo] (1853-1924).
Tale 11. La Phosphatine lyrique by Eugène Belville (1863-1931).
Tale 12. The Enchanted Factory by André Devambez.
Story 13. La Raison du plus fort by Albert Guillaume (1873-1942).
Story 14. Histoire de Karoly, roi des Dardanelles by Charles Léandre.
Sheet 16. Les Jeux de la Phosphatine Falières, a new game of goose illustrated by Benjamin Rabier [on the board]. Le Jeu de la Phosphatine Falières by Benjamin Rabier [on the envelope].
Tale 17. Lolotte and the skinny cat by Théophile Steinlen (1859-1923).
Tale 18. Le Malin Frédéric by Francisque Poulbot (1879-1946).
Tale 19. Les Petits Tambours by Bernard Naudin (1876-1946).
Soldiers must have it in their bags, Steinlen's cats love it and Karoly, the King of the Dardanelles, declared to the caricatures of the heads of state of Europe: "Spread the use of this excellent Phosphatine in your States, and universal peace will be assured for ever".
A highly sought-after collection - the series included twenty titles - and in mint condition in the original sealed envelopes. A crack on the edge of the envelope of story 11 and the envelope of plate 16 with, on the latter, a small damage to a fold.
