Description
SACHER-MASOCH (Leopold von). The Venus in Furs. A novel about flogging. Paris: Charles Carrington, 1902. - in-8, 214 x 134: frontispiece, (5 ff.), XXXVII, 216 pp. Flesh-coloured box, vertical band of squares in slight relief, crossed by the author's name and title in black, framed by 4 curved red fillets, in the centre of the first plate, date 1902 in red and horizontal band of 9 black dots in the centre of the second plate, smooth mute spine, red velvet lining and endpapers, untrimmed, beige velvet slipcase, lined with black velvet (Éloïse Baille). Binet, Martin Van Maele ou le diable se cache dans le détail, 2017, 133. First French edition, translated from the German and prefaced by Raphaël Ledos de Beaufort. This text, first published in 1870 under the title Venus im Pelz, is an autobiographical erotic novel exploring the themes of masochism, fetishism and female domination. The author, in the guise of the character Séverin, describes his quest for a relationship in which he plays the submissive slave to a cruel and dominant woman, Wanda von Dunajew, dressed in fur. The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece after Bakalowicz and 20 vignettes in the text, including two by Martin van Maele (pp. 149 and 169). Unique edition of 500 numbered copies on hollande (no. 261). A very fine copy in the original, unsigned binding by Éloïse Baille. The black velvet lining of the slipcase has left marks in places on the boards. Scattered foxing.
