Havana morocco, boards decorated with a fine oriental-style frame, composed of gilt fillets and red morocco bands, decorated with stylised foliage motifs in havana and light green morocco on a green marbled morocco background on the outside, and, on the inside, between the two red bands, a wide band of marbled Havana morocco and an oriental motif in Havana, old rose and light green morocco at the corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt and mosaic frames, first lining covered with a rich mosaic decoration composed of gilt fillets, bands of dark green morocco, and stylised motifs in mustard, red and grey morocco on a background of old rose morocco in the frames, and the same motifs in blue and grey morocco on a background of brown morocco in the centre, second lining decorated with the same design but with the colours reversed, brocaded silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, havana morocco spine folder and flap bands, lined slipcase (Ch. Meunier 1910).
First edition of this superb work illustrated with fifty-four paintings by the famous Orientalist painter Étienne DINET (1861-1929) reproduced in colour in the text or full-page, accompanied by a text by his Algerian friend Slimane Ben Brahim Bamer (1871-1953), with whom he formed a very close friendship and travelled through the desert as well as the Algerian, Oranese, Tunisian and Egyptian regions.
Edition of 400 numbered copies, this is one of 40 on japon, including a black suite of illustrations.
A precious copy in a period binding lined and mosaicked by Charles Meunier.
It has been enriched with :
- a card bearing the words "Hommage des auteurs" in the hand of Étienne Dinet, signed by him and by Slimane Ben Brahim Bamer.
- A superb original painting signed by Dinet, 156 x 113 mm, pasted on one of the endpapers, depicting a face in profile and bearing this dedication to the art critic Louis Vauxcelles (1870-1943): "à Louis Vauxcelles // l'éminent critique d'art // Hommage d'un peintre // ethnographe // EDinet".
- From a LAS from Jeanne Dinet-Rollince (1865-1947), sister of Étienne Dinet, dated 4 November 1932, 2 pages in-8, to a friend whom she invited to become an honorary member of the "Société des amis de Dinet" which had just been created: "I have enrolled you as an Honorary - i.e.. I have enrolled you as an Honorary member - i.e. a member of Honour - with no duties other than that of loving Dinet and taking an interest in the Dinet Museum in Algiers, where I want to bring together everything that it will be possible to bring together - now and in the future".
