Description
MATISSE (Henri) - BAUDELAIRE (Charles).
The Flowers of Evil.
[Paris]: La Bibliothèque française, [1947]. - In-4, 283 x 225 : frontispiece, 169 pp. (3 ff. 2 last blank), illustrated cover. Paperback, filled cover, folder.
Duthuit, Matisse, catalogue des ouvrages illustrés, n° 19.
Beautiful illustrated edition by Henri MATISSE (1869-1954), including an original etching on chine as frontispiece, printed by Lacourière, 69 drawings including 2 on the cover and 10 full-page, wood-engraved and printed by Théo Schmied, as well as 33 full-page photolithographs.
Matisse chose to base his illustrations on the female face. The frontispiece and the first 32 full-page compositions, the last of which is a portrait of Baudelaire, are portraits of women. As Duthuit points out (p. 130), the artist was inspired by 3 models, namely "Carmen, of Haitian origin, A. Nelck, whose features were already present in Reverdy's poems, and Lydia Delectorskaya, his usual model".
Limited edition of 320 numbered copies on Rives paper, signed by Henri Matisse at the justification, this one bearing the number 1.
A very well preserved copy.
The slipcase is missing.
