YACOVLEFF, Alexandre Yevgenyevich (1887–1938) – Gouache on paper, SBG Yacovleff – Upper Tonkin – Dated 1932 – Dimensions: 54 x 36 cm - Trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg, Alexandre Yacovleff became friends with Vassili Shukhaev, amongst others. From 1898, he joined the Mir Iskousstva (‘World of Art’) movement, which played a part in the revival of the Russian arts by bringing together painting, the decorative arts, theatre and illustration.He collaborated notably with Alexandre Benois and Sergei Diaghilev, and contributed to several art journals in both Russia and Europe. After the Russian Revolution, he settled in Paris in 1920, where he continued his artistic career and, a few years later, was awarded the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honour. His fame is also linked to his numerous journeys to Africa and Asia. His stays in China, Japan and Tibet gave rise to a significant body of portraits and studies devoted to the people he encountered and their traditional costumes, constituting a valuable record of these cultures at the beginning of the 20th century.
