Description
APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). *Les Mamelles de Tirésias*. A surrealist drama in two acts and a prologue. With music by Germaine Albert-Birot and seven illustrations by Serge Férat. Paris, Sic, 1918. In-8, paperback, illustrated cover. First edition illustrated with seven drawings by the painter Serge Ferrat, a friend of the poet, who designed the sets and costumes for the play. The first performance took place on 24 June 1917, organised by the magazine *Sic* (Société internationale des cubistes), at the Théâtre de Montmartre, with music by Germaine Albert-Birot (1877–1931), whose scores are printed as inserts within the book. It is in the preface to this text that Guillaume Apollinaire coined the term ‘surrealist’, which was later adopted by André Breton. The subscription form and the ‘Newly Published’ leaflet are enclosed. From the libraries of Paul Éluard and Gala, with bookplates. Certain passages in the text are underlined in pencil.
