Description
ARAGON (Louis). Persécuté Persécuteur. Paris, Éditions surréalistes, 1931. In-4, paperback. First edition. One of 100 non-commercial copies printed on green paper. This copy features an autograph dedication by the author on the half-title page: ‘To Valentine Hugo, to coax the toucan, but also with my respectful friendship, Aragon’, and a second dedication by Valentine Hugo addressed to Suzanne Muzard, André Breton’s beloved, on the half-title page: ‘Dear Suzanne, Aragon once had lunch at my home at the Palais Royal in 1931, and my magnificent toucan was hardly amiable towards him; indeed, he was amiable only towards me. The toucan’s time is past, as is Aragon’s ‘time of cherries’—naturally. Your friend Valentine 17-5-61”. *Le Toucan* is the title of a painting by Valentine Hugo, reproduced in the catalogue *Surréalisme au féminin?* A marvellous letter that testifies to the intrinsic quality of the toucan as both a lock and a key to understanding Valentine Hugo. A fellow traveller of Surrealism, Valentine Hugo associated with Louis Aragon within André Breton’s circle and contributed, through her illustrations, to several of the movement’s projects. Pages slightly sun-faded. Surrealism au féminin?, Musée de Montmartre, 2023, p. 23.
