A self-taught painter and writer, Gaston Chaissac (1910–1964) was one of the most original figures in post-war French art. Initially supported by Jean Dubuffet, who saw him as a representative of Art brut, he developed a deeply personal body of work, blending painting, drawing and writing. His correspondence with the leading artists and writers of his time now constitutes a major part of his oeuvre.
