DALÌ (Salvador). Babaouo. Unpublished screenplay, preceded by a summary of a critical history of cinema and followed by *Guillaume Tell*, a Portuguese ballet. Paris, Cahiers Libres, 1932. In-8, brown half-shagreen, cover and spine, slipcase and case in pine-green half-maroquin (Madelain). First edition. Printed in a run of 623 copies; this is an unnumbered press copy, enhanced by a signed autograph dedication from Salvador Dalì to Raymond Roussel (1877–1933): To Raymond Roussel, whose magnificently bewildering systems bring us notions of lyrical precision hitherto unknown. Salvador Dalì. Raymond Roussel acknowledged receipt of this dedication by replying to Dalí on one of his calling cards on 4 November 1932: ‘A thousand thanks, my dear colleague, for your kind parcel and for your precious dedication, which seems to prove to me that you are already familiar with my *Nouvelles Impressions d’Afrique*, of which I am very proud. It is with great curiosity and much collegial warmth that I shall read *Babaouo*. Yours most gratefully, Raymond Roussel”. Poet, playwright and inventor of the “reading machine”, the author of *Impressions d’Afrique* (1909), Raymond Roussel was a great source of inspiration for Salvador Dalí. In 1938, Dalí produced a surrealist self-portrait whose title was borrowed from Roussel’s novel and which is now held at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.
