First edition illustrated with a portrait of Gala and Éluard based on an original drawing by Max Ernst, reproduced in line art on the frontispiece. One of 21 copies printed on Rives Holland paper. Autograph dedication signed by the author: ‘To Georges Hugnet. Not knowing where the light lies, in open eyes or closed eyes, where life lies. Your friend, Paul Éluard.’ This dedication brings together two leading figures of Surrealism, Georges Hugnet and Paul Éluard, whose friendship was nourished by numerous literary and artistic collaborations.
