ÉLUARD (Paul). *Poésie et vérité* 1942, illustrated by Oscar Dominguez. Paris, Les Nourritures Terrestres, 1947. In-4, loose-leaf, green paper cover, printed paper slipcase. A clandestine text by Paul Éluard, originally published in Algiers in 1942, ‘translated and distributed throughout Europe, under the counter, by radio, by parachute drops...’
It opens with the famous poem ‘Liberté… j’écris ton nom’.
The illustrations consist of 33 original etchings by the Spanish surrealist painter Oscar Dominguez, including one on the cover, one in colour as a frontispiece, and the others framing each page of the text. The text, along with the colophon, title and ‘printed’ mark, are reproduced in facsimile in Éluard’s own handwriting.
Printed in an edition of 221 copies; this is one of 35 copies on Lana rag paper, featuring a sequence of early proofs and the colour breakdown of the plate (in green).
