FERRY (Jean). 4 letters and 12 postcards addressed to Pascal Pia. 1962–1973. 4 pp. in-4, written in green ink with vignettes and a letterhead, and 12 postcards, 5 envelopes. An amusing collection of 4 autograph, signed letters concerning ‘Pataphysics. - On the 12th of the month of Clinamen, year 89 E.P., on the feast day of St George Dazet, 1 p., in-4, double-sided. Letter paper bearing the letterhead of the College of ‘Pataphysics. Seal of the Cabinet of the Archisphragidophore O.G.G. Jean Ferry Satrape. Congratulatory remarks in 1962 on the publication of the *Album Zutique* and Pascal Pia’s ‘most learned study’, in which he corrects a few ‘minor details’. - On the 6th of the month of Sable, year 99 E.P., on the feast day of St Navet and St Perruque, humanists, 1 p. in-4, double-sided, envelope [August 1971]. Letterhead paper from the College of Pataphysics. This is a letter of effusive congratulations on *Romanciers, poètes et essayistes du XIXe siècle* (*Novelists, Poets and Essayists of the 19th Century*), which plunges him both into the depths of humility and to the very heights of elation. - The 11th phalle, year 98 E.P., on the feast day of Se Lèchefrite, the boot-maker, 1 p., folio, double-sided, envelope [December 1971]. The letter paper is illustrated with a green candle and a quotation: ‘One has no need of light when one is guided by Faustroll in print.’ Ferry is in favour of admitting the ‘old Dutch engraver’ Maurits Cornelis Escher, ‘master of imaginary solutions’, into the Order of the Satraps. - Best and most sincere wishes for pataphysical and other forms of happiness for the year 90. In-4, on the same letter paper as above. Enclosed are 12 autographed greeting cards from Jean Ferry addressed to Pascal Pia and illustrated with the College of ‘Pataphysics. Dated from the 1960s and 1970s, with 3 envelopes, 2 of which are adorned with stamps from the Collège de ’Pataphysique featuring a portrait of Baron Jean Mollet. The Collège de ’Pataphysique, founded in 1948, is a literary society inspired by the world of Alfred Jarry. With erudite humour, its members cultivate ’Pataphysics, the “science of imaginary solutions” conceived by Jarry, and symbolically place Dr Faustroll, the hero of his 1911 novel of the same name, at their head.
