Description
GAINSBOURG (Serge). Evguénie Sokolov. Paris, NRF, 1980. Oblong 8vo, paperback. First edition—of which no large-format version was printed—of this provocative ‘parabolic tale’ about modern painting.
“The mask falls, the man remains and the hero vanishes”.
Signed autograph dedication by the author: To Sabine, Serge Gainsbourg.
Serge Gainsbourg was a complete artist. We are familiar with his music and the lyrics of his songs, as well as his painting, but this tale reveals yet another of his talents; as in the opening paragraph of *Evguénie Sokolov*, whose name sounds like Kalashnikov, and for good reason: ‘In my life, lying on this hospital bed with shit flies buzzing overhead—my own bed—images come to me, sometimes precise, often confused, “out of focus” as photographers say, some overexposed, others, on the contrary, obscure, which, strung together, would make a film that is both grotesque and atrocious due to the peculiarity that its soundtrack—running parallel to the celluloid’s longitudinal perforations—would consist solely of bursts of intestinal gas. ”
