JAMES (Edward). *The Bones Of My Hand*. Oxford University Press, London, Humphrey Milford, 1938. In-8, publisher’s hardback, illustrated dust jacket. Frontispiece by Paul Tchelitcheff. This copy is enhanced by a superb autograph dedication, signed and illustrated with a large drawing by the author, addressed to Elsa Schiaparelli: ‘To the Sphinx of couture, dearest Elsa from the poet Edward with admiration and affection’. Paris, 18 March 1938 (and with optimism too, to help us get through these dark times). A great patron of Surrealism, Edward James (1907–1984) was the leading collector of René Magritte’s work, commissioning several of his now-iconic paintings, including *Le Principe du plaisir* and *La Reproduction interdite* in 1937. He was also one of Salvador Dalí’s principal patrons in the 1930s, commissioning from him, in particular, the famous ‘Lobster Telephone’ in 1936 and the ‘Mae West Sofa’ – inspired by the glamorous red lips of the American actress Mae West – in 1937. Edward James is also the creator of the famous gardens of Xilitla, an extraordinary collection of surrealist sculptures and architectural features built in the heart of the Mexican jungle.
