Description
[KAPLAN (Nelly)]. BELEN. Memoirs of a Sheet-Reader. Paris, J.-J. Pauvert, 1973. 8vo, paperback, untrimmed. First edition. Printed in a run of 50 copies on Navarre matt Japanese paper. Born in Buenos Aires in 1931, Nelly Kaplan moved to Paris in the early 1950s. She became the assistant to Abel Gance, whose biographer she would later become, before joining the circle of the last Surrealists, notably André Breton and Philippe Soupault, to whom she was very close. *Mémoires d’une liseuse de draps*, published under the pseudonym Belen, was immediately censored and banned from circulation. This did not prevent the novel from becoming one of the most sought-after works in her oeuvre. Cover slightly scuffed.
