Description
LEDUC (Violette). *L’Asphyxie*. Paris, NRF, 1946. In-12, paperback, untrimmed. First edition. Press copy on publication paper. Autograph dedication signed by the author: To L. R. Lef****. “My mother never held my hand… She would help me up and down the kerbs by barely pinching my clothes where the armhole is easy to grasp. It humiliated me. I felt as though I were inside the carcass of an old horse that a cart driver was dragging along by the ear...” Thus begins Violette Leduc’s first book. *L’Asphyxie* marks the literary debut of one of the most distinctive voices of the 20th century. Published with the support of Simone de Beauvoir in the ‘Espoir’ collection edited by Albert Camus, this autobiographical account, of rare poetic intensity, recounts the author’s painful childhood and lays the foundations for the body of work that would culminate in *La Bâtarde* in 1964. Small tears to the cover, creased spine, a few faint foxing spots.
