Description
RÉAGE (Dominique Aury, known as Pauline). *The Story of O*. Sceaux: Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1954. 12mo, paperback, uncut, untrimmed. First edition, featuring Jean Paulhan’s famous preface entitled ‘On Happiness in Slavery’. The title page is adorned with an original etching by Hans Bellmer, printed in red chalk.
One of the extremely rare first-print copies on Arches paper, a limited edition of 20.
Published anonymously under the pseudonym Pauline Réage, *Histoire d’O* remained shrouded in mystery for forty years before Dominique Aury (1907–1998), a critic and translator at Gallimard, revealed its true authorship in 1994. Written for Jean Paulhan, this story turns the conventions of erotic literature on their head and caused a major scandal upon its publication in June 1954. Despite an initially limited circulation, the novel was awarded the Prix des Deux Magots in 1955.
