Description
ROUSSEL (Raymond). *Nouvelles impressions d’Afrique*, followed by *L’Âme de Victor Hugo*. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1932. In-12, paperback, untrimmed, uncut. First edition, illustrated with 59 full-page illustrations by Henri-Achille Zo. One of the copies printed on imperial Japanese paper, the print run of which is unknown. Dr Pierre Janet remarked of Roussel that he ‘has a very interesting conception of literary beauty; the work must contain nothing real, no observation of the world or of minds, nothing but entirely imaginary combinations: these are already ideas of a world beyond the human’. Roussel himself wrote: ‘For me, imagination is everything’. See, on this subject, the article published by Michel Leiris in the journal *Critique*, ‘Conception and Reality in Raymond Roussel’, in 1954. A copy as published, with all margins intact, complete with the insert *La Critique* and *Raymond Roussel*.
