Description
SCHWOB (Marcel). *Le Livre de Monelle*. Paris, Léon Chailley, 1894. 18mo, red half-maroquin Bradel binding, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the author’s masterpieces.
The book failed to win over the general public, but, in literary circles, ‘the enthusiasm for the book [was] immediate: everywhere, a chorus of praise was directed at Schwob, his subtlety and his love’, notes Sylvain Goudemare: Mallarmé, Rodenbach, Régnier, Coppée, Renard, Maeterlinck—all the author’s friends expressed their admiration for *Monelle*.
Printed in a run of 1,000 copies, plus 10 ‘japons’ and 15 ‘hollandes’, some of which were put back on sale with a new cover in 1897.
