Description
[SURREALISM]. BARR (Alfred H. Jr.). Fantastic Art: Dada and Surrealism. Foreword by A. H. Barr. New York, Museum of Modern Art, 1936. In-8, the publisher’s green cardboard binding illustrated with a composition by Jean Arp. Exhibition catalogue edited by Alfred Barr (1902–1981), first director of MoMA, and illustrated with numerous reproductions of works by Calder, Dove, Evans, Gonzales, O’Keeffe, Facteur Cheval, Gaudí, Schwitters, Chirico, Duchamp, Klee, Braccelli, etc. A signed autograph copy sent by Alfred Barr to Georges Hugnet, dated December 1936, at the start of the MoMA exhibition. Georges Hugnet wrote the essays ‘Dada’ and ‘In the Light of Surrealism’ for the exhibition catalogue, which were translated into English by Margaret Scolari Barr, Alfred Barr’s wife. Complete with dust jacket featuring a photograph by Man Ray.
