Description
Tabib matarasi" doctor's barrel Ottoman Empire, 19th century Wooden barrel-shaped flask resting on a base with four carved triangles, decorated with floral or star-shaped buds in engraved brass. The top has an engraved neck, a spout with filter and a handle. Height: 19 cm - Length: 29 cm In Ottoman times, doctors who went to the front with the army carried small water barrels or "doctor's barrels", very few of which have survived to the present day. They contained a "sharbat", a drink made from zamzam water, intended for seriously wounded soldiers whose outcome was fatal. The expression "drinking the liquor of the dying", used in Turkish culture, comes from this practice. A similar example can be found at the Galata Mevlevihanesi Müzesi in Istanbul.
