Description
Pavel Dmitrievitch CHIPOV (Russia, 1860-1919) Military carriage galloping through the forest (1899) Watercolour and gouache on paper, signed and dated lower right in Cyrillic. Framed. Sight size: 45.5 x 65 cm Historical background: Pavel Dmitrievitch Chipov (1860-1919) was a Russian painter and lieutenant-general, recognised as one of the masters of military portraiture at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Born into the nobility of the province of Kostroma, trained at the Corps des Pages and then at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, he combined his career as an officer with his artistic practice. Taking part in the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War, he sketched soldiers and camp scenes in pencil and watercolour with an almost documentary accuracy. He was decorated with several military orders, including Saint-Georges (4? class), Sainte-Anne, Saint-Stanislas and Saint-Vladimir. After the Revolution, he was shot by the Bolsheviks in Petrograd. Expert: Mr Maxime CHARRON
