Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569) Prospectus Tyburtinus (Tiburtine Perspective). (Plate from a series of 12 large landscapes). c. 1553–1556. Etching and burin engraving by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 427 x 322 mm. Lebeer 1 (ii/iii); Hollstein 3; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 49. A very fine print on thin laid paper, preceding number 12 in the suite, with an excudum. Old annotations in pen and sepia ink in the margin. A few circular, oily, rust-coloured stains. Traces of creases at the edges and several short tears, previously restored, on the reverse. An oblique oxidised line across the cloud in the centre. Margins of 5 to 8 mm. Reproduced in J. van der Stock, ed., Hieronymus Cock; Engraving in the Renaissance (exhibition at the Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels, and at the Custodia Foundation, Frits Lugt Collection), Paris, Brussels, Fonds Mercator ed., 2013, p. 381, no. 107.1. ‘The Prospectus Tyburtinus focuses on the cascades which, alongside the ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s villa, constitute one of the attractions of the ancient city of Tibur (Tivoli), not far from Rome’. It is unusual for the series as it depicts a specific location, probably based on a drawing Bruegel made whilst in Rome around 1553. However, no preparatory sketch survives.” (British Museum).
