Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569)
S. Hieronymus in Deserto (St Jerome in the Desert). (Plate from a series of 12 large landscapes). c. 1553–1556. Etching and chiselling by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 422 x 321 mm. Lebeer 2; Hollstein 7; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 50. A fine print on thin laid paper, trimmed to a square edge but with the tablet fully intact. A vertical centre crease with a small tear visible through the paper. Scattered crease marks. A 90 mm tear in the lower part of the subject, with a large piece of reinforcement paper on the reverse. A strip of reinforcement paper around the edge on the reverse. Light foxing and soiling. A small blue ink stain in the foliage on the right. Stains (notably ink) on the reverse.
