Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569)
Alpine landscape traversed by a deep valley. (Plate from a series of 12 large landscapes). c. 1553–1556. Etching and engraving by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 430 x 300 mm. Lebeer 4; Hollstein 9; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 52. A fine print on thin laid paper, trimmed to a square edge, without the title block. A few very faint foxing spots on the reverse. A vertical drying crease in the centre. A 50 mm oblique tear at the foot of the subject, previously restored on the reverse. A 20 mm wide reinforcement strip (paper pulp) along the right-hand edge on the reverse. Three remnants of a former mounting at the top on the reverse.
