Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569) Solicitudo Rustica (Rural Concern). (One of a series of 12 large landscapes). c. 1553–1556. Etching and engraving by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 427 x 322 mm. Lebeer 7; Hollstein 1; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 16. A fine print on laid paper, bearing Danckertz’s address, trimmed outside the square line but with the inscription panel fully intact. A vertical drying crease down the centre. Two other faint oblique creases visible on the reverse. Several small losses along the upper edge, filled in on the reverse. Two circular, oily, rust-coloured stains in the sky and a few other lighter ones, including a larger one at the bottom of the subject. The original drawing is held at the British Museum (though its attribution is disputed by N. Orenstein). As with all the plates in the series, the subject is derived from the mountain landscapes that had made a deep impression on Bruegel during his crossing of the Alps on his way to Italy. Certain elements (the trees in the foreground, the figures and the boats) were added by the engravers. ‘Larry Silver suspects a typographical error in this title, which is ill-suited to the subject depicted. In his view, the title should have been “Solitudo rustica”. This hypothesis seems very plausible; it would explain the unusual presence of a single “L” for “sollicitudo”.’ ’ (D.
